From the poorest countries to the richest, we know now we cannot avoid waste’s pervasive presence as mere witnesses. While there is no quick solution or convenient app to make this problem disappear, our festival will push our communities to become more than witnesses. We want to encourage solidarity among all members of our community to have more awareness.
Waste has many faces, forms, and stories. Flooding our cities, our oceans, and perhaps just as important, waste is part of our bodies, spiritual beliefs, and ideas. Waste haunts us, yet unlike a ghost, it is everywhere and in plain sight.
From food waste to e-waste to plastics, the festival aims to enhance the audience’s evolving definition of waste and to adopt a more profound way of thinking about our lifestyle and climate change. The films reveal our most sensitive debates around economics, tolerance, and justice for planet earth.
The Al Sidr environmental film festival believes in the power of cinema to provoke critical thinking about environmental issues and inspire action. The first edition will focus on waste and explore how it has polluted our world, but also how we can use and understand waste to improve Abu Dhabi and the world.
ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT AGENCY-ABU DHABI
The Environment Agency Abu Dhabi regulates and enforces Abu Dhabi's environmental laws to protect biodiversity and preserve the quality of life for a sustainable future. Starting as a small group of pioneering ecologists in 1996 working in the harsh desert environment, we have grown – breaking down barriers and pushing the limits of science and conservation. We are now the largest environmental regulator in the Middle East, continuing the strong legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan by exemplifying his values of conservation.
